How to write the letter N

The capital N is written in three strokes, and the small n in two strokes. The worksheet above is already set to this letter. It shows a model of each letter with green numbered start points and red direction arrows, then rows of dotted copies to trace and empty space to write on your own. Change the letter case, the size or the number of rows in the settings.

Capital N

Start at the bottom left and go straight up. Slide down diagonally to the bottom right. Then go straight up to the top right. The rhythm is up, down, up.

Small n

Draw a short line down from the middle line. Then start on the line about halfway down, make a round hump to the right and come down to the base line.

Teaching tip for N

The slanted line of the capital N goes down from the top left to the bottom right, like a slide. If it goes the other way, the N is reversed, which is a common mistake. The small n is half of an m, and an upside-down u.

The sound of N and words to practice

The letter N usually stands for the sound /n/ as in nest. Words to practice: nest, nose, net, nut, nine, nurse. Say each word, listen for the first sound and trace the letter. Try the beginning sounds worksheets to match the sound to pictures, or trace the words themselves with word tracing.

Letters that look alike

The letter N is easy to mix up with Letter Mm and Letter Hh. Practice them on separate days, one at a time, and say the starting point out loud each time before the pencil touches the paper.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my child write the capital N backwards?

A reversed N is very common because the middle line can slant either way. Tell your child that it slides down from the top left, like a slide at the playground, and trace the numbered arrows together: up, down, up.
