How to write the letter H
The capital H is written in three strokes, and the small h in two strokes. The worksheet above is already set to this letter. It shows a model of each letter with green numbered start points and red direction arrows, then rows of dotted copies to trace and empty space to write on your own. Change the letter case, the size or the number of rows in the settings.
Capital H
Draw a straight line down on the left. Then draw another straight line down on the right, the same length. Finish with a short line across the middle, from left to right, to join them.
Small h
Draw a tall straight line down from the top line to the base line. Then start on the line a little above the base line, go up and over in a round hump to the middle line, and come straight down to the base line on the right.
Teaching tip for H
Both legs of the small h must reach the base line, and the hump should start on the tall line instead of beside it. Compare it with n: the h has the tall line that "reaches up to the roof". The capital H is made of three straight lines, so it is a good letter for a beginner.
The sound of H and words to practice
The letter H usually stands for the sound /h/ as in hat (a puff of breath). Words to practice: hat, horse, house, hand, heart, hippo. Say each word, listen for the first sound and trace the letter. Try the beginning sounds worksheets to match the sound to pictures, or trace the words themselves with word tracing.
Letters that look alike
The letter H is easy to mix up with Letter Nn and Letter Kk. Practice them on separate days, one at a time, and say the starting point out loud each time before the pencil touches the paper.

Frequently asked questions
How is the small h different from the small n?
Both have a hump, but h has a tall line that reaches the top line, while n starts at the middle line. A simple way to remember is that the h "goes up to the roof". Practice h and n on separate days so the two shapes do not blur together.
