Kindergarten Worksheets for Ages 5 to 6

Letters, numbers, sounds and early words for children in kindergarten, Reception and Year 1, with an answer key where it helps.

What kindergarteners are working on

At five and six, children move from tracing to writing. They learn to form every letter, write their name and short words, connect letters with sounds, read simple three-letter words and count to 20 and beyond. In the US, kindergarten math standards (Common Core, K.CC) ask children to count to 100 by ones and tens and to write the numbers 0 to 20. Reception and Year 1 in England cover similar ground.

A simple week to try

  1. Monday: practice two or three letters with letter formation.
  2. Tuesday: do ten questions of beginning sounds for kindergarten.
  3. Wednesday: trace numbers and their words on number tracing for kindergarten.
  4. Thursday: read and match CVC words.
  5. Friday: a quick visual discrimination puzzle, or a free-choice favorite.

From tracing to writing on their own

Tracing is a stepping stone. When a letter or word feels easy, change the layout to include an empty practice line (on the word tracing page, open More options and choose Trace + empty practice line) so that your child writes from memory. Keep tracing for the letters that are still tricky.

Frequently asked questions

How long should kindergarten homework take?

Ten to fifteen minutes a day is a common guide. If your child is working hard for longer than that, stop and try again tomorrow.

Which skills matter most in kindergarten?

Letter sounds, writing letters correctly, counting and writing numbers to 20, and starting to read short words. The tools on this page cover all four.

Are these worksheets suitable for Reception and Year 1?

Yes. Kindergarten in the US is about the same age as Reception in England, and the skills continue into Year 1. Children who find them easy can try harder settings, such as the Hard level of the beginning sounds worksheets.

Can I print these for my class?

Yes. Teachers and parents may print as many copies as they need for their own children or class. Please do not sell the worksheets or post them on another site as your own.
