Free Printable Workbooks for Kids: Tracing, Coloring and Writing (PDF)
Ten complete, ready-to-print workbooks for ages 2 to 9, from first lines and dots to cursive handwriting. Every book is a free PDF in US Letter and A4 with no sign-up, and every page can be printed at home or in class.
A workbook gives a child something that a single worksheet cannot: a clear order. Each KidsTracing workbook starts with the easiest activity, builds one small step at a time, finishes with a few review games and ends with a certificate. The 428 pages in the ten books were made with the same engine as our free worksheet generators, so the letter shapes, stroke arrows and dotted lines match what you see everywhere else on the site.
The workbooks are different from the generators on purpose. A generator makes a page to your own specification, for example a child’s name or a list of spelling words. A workbook is a fixed, planned set, which is easier when you want to hand a child a book and let them work through it. Many families use both: a workbook for the daily routine, and a generator for the extra page that one child needs.
Every workbook is written for a specific age range, and the pages are grouped in short sections so you can print one section at a time instead of a whole book. Use the age list below to pick a starting point, and remember that ages are a guide. A child who loves dot markers at five can start with the Dot Marker Activity Book and still move on to the ABC Tracing Book the same week.

How to print a workbook
Choose US Letter or A4
Download the size that matches your paper. US Letter is the standard in the United States and Canada. A4 is the standard in the UK, the EU, Australia, India and most other countries.
Open the PDF and press Print
In the print window choose “Actual size” or “100%” so that lines and shapes keep their real size. If you only have the other paper size, choose “Fit to page” instead; the margins are wide enough that nothing is cut off.
Print a few pages at a time
Type a page range such as 4-9 to print only one section. The contents table on each book page shows the page numbers, and every page has its number in the bottom corner.
Use the right paper and tools
Regular copy paper is fine for pencils and crayons. Use thicker paper or card stock for dot markers and wet markers, and plain paper for cutting.
Keep a copy of the PDF
Save the file on your device. You can reprint any page when a child needs more practice, or print a fresh book for a younger sibling.
Need a single custom page?
The workbooks are fixed sets. If you need one page with your own name, letters, numbers or word list, use our free generators instead. They make the same style of page in seconds. See All free worksheet tools, or browse by age: Preschool Worksheets and Kindergarten Worksheets.
Frequently asked questions
Are the KidsTracing workbooks really free?
Yes. You can download and print the workbooks at no cost, with no sign-up and no email address. They are free for use at home and in the classroom. You may print as many copies as you need for your own children or students, but please do not sell the files, claim them as your own or host them on another website. To share a workbook, share the link to its page instead.
Should I download US Letter or A4?
Use US Letter if you are in the United States or Canada, and A4 almost everywhere else. The two sizes are almost the same, so either one will print well on the other paper if you choose “Fit to page”.
What ages are the workbooks for?
They cover ages 2 to 9. The Dot Marker Activity Book starts at age 2, the pen control, shapes, ABC, number, fruit, animal and scissor books suit ages 3 to 6, the CVC Words Workbook is for ages 4 to 6 and the Cursive Handwriting Workbook is for ages 6 to 9.
Do I need a color printer?
No. Most pages work in black and white. Color printing makes the matching pages, the cut-out pictures and the covers more fun, and children can always color the black outlines themselves.
Which workbook should we start with?
For a child who is not yet holding a pencil, begin with the Dot Marker Activity Book or the Pen Control and Pre-Writing Book. For a child who is ready for letters and numbers, use the ABC Tracing Book and the Number Tracing and Counting Book. The reading-ready CVC Words Workbook comes after the child knows the letter sounds.
Can I use the workbooks in my classroom or co-op?
Yes. Teachers, tutors and homeschool groups may print copies for their own students. Please send other teachers to the workbook’s page so that they can download the file themselves.
Can I ask for a new workbook?
Yes. New workbooks and new pages are added over time, and ideas from parents and teachers help us choose them. Use the contact page to tell us what your child needs.
