How to write the letter L
The capital L is written in two strokes, and the small l in one stroke. The worksheet above is already set to this letter. It shows a model of each letter with green numbered start points and red direction arrows, then rows of dotted copies to trace and empty space to write on your own. Change the letter case, the size or the number of rows in the settings.
Capital L
Draw a straight line down from the top to the bottom. Then lift your pencil and draw a line across the bottom, from left to right.
Small l
Draw one tall straight line from the top line to the base line. That is all there is to it.
Teaching tip for L
The small l is as tall as a capital letter: it reaches the top line. Children often make it too short, which turns it into another letter. It is also easy to confuse with a capital I and the number 1, so show all three in a printed book.
The sound of L and words to practice
The letter L usually stands for the sound /l/ as in lion. Words to practice: lion, lemon, leaf, ladder, lamp, ladybug. Say each word, listen for the first sound and trace the letter. Try the beginning sounds worksheets to match the sound to pictures, or trace the words themselves with word tracing.
Letters that look alike
The letter L is easy to mix up with Letter Ii and Letter Tt. Practice them on separate days, one at a time, and say the starting point out loud each time before the pencil touches the paper.
